Cocktail Carnival at the House of Lions: The Xander Bar's «Ballroom Card»

The Xander Bar's anniversary cocktail menu immerses us in the elevated and intriguing atmosphere of a St. Petersburg ball. The three sections of the «historic» cocktail menu are named after the main components of the event: «The Stage», «The Characters», and «The Act».

The first quartet of cocktails, «The Stage», is dedicated to the palaces within whose walls the finest evening events of pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg were held. These include the Winter Palace, the House of Lions, the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, and the Marble Palace. The unique architectural features, history, and atmosphere of each palace are reflected in the style and character of the cocktails dedicated to them.

The section titled «The Characters» is a nod to the organizers of the festivities — Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, the mistress of the House of Lions Cleopatra Ilyinichna Lobanova-Rostovskaya, as well as Emperors Nicholas II and Alexander I, who, incidentally, lends his name to Xander Bar.

Cocktail variations on the theme of the most popular ballroom dances bear the names of the polonaise, mazurka, waltz, and cotillion. These were precisely the dances included in the «mandatory program» of a classical St. Petersburg ball and, as a rule, followed one another, unfolding the evening's drama.

To get a complete impression of a ballroom evening at the House of Lions, one should choose a set of four cocktails called «Carnival». It includes cocktails «House of Lions», «Cleopatra Ilyinichna», and «Waltz», as well as the venue's signature drink, the Complicated Negroni cocktail. As a compliment, guests will be offered miniature desserts, specially crafted to pair with each drink.
